Copper (Cu) Copper has been designated as a primary influencer of repoduction, immune function and red blood cell activity. With the possible exception of phosphorus, copper is the mineral most likely to be deficient in grazing cattle. Delayed or suppressed estrus and embryo death, often between days 30 and 50 of gestation, are common symptoms of copper deficiency in beef cattle. Copper is involved in a wide variety of physiological function: iron absorption and hemoglobin formation, energy metabolism protecting tissues from oxidation and connective tissue metabolism. Research shows that supplemental organic copper is most effective if fed during breeding, settling, embryo development, during times of anemia, in regions with high molybdenum, during weaning, receiving, shipping and other times of stress or exposure to pathogens. The most common method of treating a copper deficiency is to feed a supplemntal copper source with high bioavailability. SQM Copper Products:
